A NEET percentile tells you what share of candidates you scored above — it is not a percentage of marks and it is not a rank. The 50th percentile means you scored higher than half of all candidates who appeared. Qualifying requires the 50th percentile for unreserved candidates, 40th for OBC-NCL, SC and ST, and 45th for PwD-UR. In NEET 2025 that translated to a score of 144 for unreserved and 113 for reserved categories. Qualifying makes you eligible for counselling; it does not indicate that a seat is reachable.
The three numbers people confuse

They are unrelated. A 50th percentile score has been as low as 144 out of 720 — roughly 20% of the paper — because percentile describes your position relative to everyone else, not your command of the syllabus.

Qualifying is not admission — and the gap is enormous
This is the single most consequential misunderstanding on this topic.
Clearing the 50th percentile puts you in the counselling pool. It says nothing about whether a seat converts. Hundreds of thousands of candidates qualify each year for a far smaller number of seats, and below a certain rank every remaining seat is a paid seat costing between ₹45 lakh and ₹1.2 crore for the course.
So a candidate who has “qualified NEET” may still have no affordable route to MBBS at all. That is not a failure of the exam or of counselling; it is arithmetic. What to do about it is covered on MBBS admission with a low NEET score.
Converting percentile to rank
Roughly: if roughly 20 lakh candidates appear, the 50th percentile sits near rank 10,00,000 and the 90th percentile near rank 2,00,000. The precise conversion depends on how many candidates actually appeared that year, which is published with the result.
