Short answer

A NEET score does not map to a fixed rank — the same marks produce a different All India Rank every year, because the conversion depends on paper difficulty and on how many candidates sat the exam. As a broad planning guide from recent cycles: 550 marks lands near AIR 40,000-55,000, 500 near 80,000-1,10,000, 450 near 1,30,000-1,80,000, 400 near 2,00,000-2,80,000, 350 near 3,00,000-4,00,000 and 300 near 4,20,000-5,50,000. Plan against your actual NTA rank card, not against any table.

How to read these ranks: a NEET score does not convert to a fixed rank. The same marks produce a different All India Rank each year depending on paper difficulty and the number of candidates. The bands here are indicative, drawn from recent cycles, and are for planning only — your actual rank is the one printed on your NTA rank card, and that is the number to use when reading a seat matrix.

The indicative bands

NEET score Approximate AIR What it realistically reaches
600+ Under 25,000 Good government colleges, most states
550 40,000 – 55,000 Government seat likely; mid-tier AIQ in play
500 80,000 – 1,10,000 Government realistic in several states
450 1,30,000 – 1,80,000 Reserved-category government; private government quota
400 2,00,000 – 2,80,000 Private government quota; reserved-category government
350 3,00,000 – 4,00,000 Management quota and deemed universities
300 4,20,000 – 5,50,000 Management quota and deemed universities
144 (UR qualifying) Qualified, but few affordable seats convert

Why the conversion moves

Paper difficulty. A harder paper compresses scores, so a given mark buys a better rank. An easier paper does the opposite. This alone can shift a score’s rank by tens of thousands.

Candidate numbers. NEET entries have trended upward. More candidates means more people above any given score, so the same marks produce a numerically worse rank each year without the competition actually easing in any meaningful sense.

Tie-breaking. Where scores tie, NTA applies tie-break rules, which is why two candidates with identical marks can hold different ranks.

This is why a marks-to-rank table published in advance of a result is guesswork, and why every table on this site — including the one above — is labelled indicative.

Rank is not the number that gets you a seat

Your All India Rank matters far less than the closing rank for your category, in your state, in the round you are in. A rank that is hopeless in round 1 is frequently comfortable by the stray vacancy round, and a rank that fails in an unreserved list may convert easily in a category list.

So the sequence is: get your actual rank from the NTA card, then read your state authority’s round-wise allotment PDFs and the MCC seat matrix for your category, then build a choice list. Not the other way round.

Where to start: MBBS admission with a low NEET score.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert my NEET marks to rank?

There is no fixed formula. NTA publishes your actual All India Rank on your rank card after the result. Marks-to-rank tables published before that are estimates based on previous years and shift with paper difficulty and candidate numbers.

Does the same NEET score give the same rank every year?

No. Paper difficulty and the number of candidates both change annually, so identical marks routinely produce ranks tens of thousands apart between cycles.

Is rank or score more important for MBBS admission?

Rank, but only relative to the closing rank for your category, state and counselling round. That closing rank is the number that actually decides whether a seat converts.
