NRI-category MBBS tuition at Santosh Medical College is USD 75,000 per year for the first four instalments and USD 37,500 in the fifth — USD 337,500 for the course, payable annually in the rupee equivalent. That is roughly 2.7 times the general-category fee. NRI seats are allotted through the same MCC deemed-university counselling as every other seat, against documented NRI status that is verified at reporting; there is no separate NRI application to the college.

These are the figures in the most recent fee schedule Santosh Deemed to be University publishes openly, which is headed "MBBS Course 2020-21". The university notifies the 2026-27 schedule separately, and the binding figures for your admission are the ones in the MCC fee table at the time of counselling. Verify before you pay.
At an exchange rate near ₹87 to the dollar, USD 75,000 is approximately ₹65 lakh per year, and USD 337,500 is approximately ₹2.9 crore for the course. The rupee equivalent is fixed at the time of each annual payment, so a depreciating rupee raises your cost over five and a half years — this is a real currency risk, not a rounding note, and on a nine-figure total it is worth hedging or at least budgeting a buffer against.
Hostel is charged separately, on the same schedule as general-category students:
| Accommodation | Boys | Girls |
|---|---|---|
| Twin sharing, non-AC | 2,00,000 | 2,00,000 |
| Single, non-AC | 3,00,000 | 3,00,000 |
| Twin sharing, AC | 3,00,000 | 3,00,000 |
| Single, AC | 4,00,000 | 4,00,000 |
Note: hostel accommodation is mandatory for girl students. Source: Santosh Deemed to be University, official fee schedule, hostel section.
NRI versus general category: the comparison nobody makes explicitly
| General category | NRI category | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual tuition | ₹24,00,000 | ~₹65,00,000 (USD 75,000) |
| Total tuition | ₹1,08,00,000 | ~₹2.9 crore (USD 337,500) |
| Payment cycle | Quarterly | Annual |
| Allotment route | MCC deemed counselling | MCC deemed counselling, NRI pool |
| Competition | Very high — national pool | Much lower — small eligible pool |
| Currency risk | None | Yes, priced in USD |
The trade is rank tolerance for money, again, but sharper. NRI seats close at considerably looser ranks than institutional seats because the eligible pool is small. If you have genuine, documentable NRI status and the money, an NRI seat is a materially easier route to the same degree.
If you do not have genuine NRI status, this is not a route. More on that below.
Eligibility and documents
An NRI claim is verified, not asserted. Expect to produce:
- Proof of NRI status — of the candidate, or of the sponsoring relative.
- Proof of the relationship between sponsor and candidate. MCC defines which relatives qualify as sponsors, and the definition is narrower than families expect. A distant relative willing to sign is usually not sufficient.
- An embassy-attested affidavit of sponsorship, attested at the Indian embassy or consulate in the sponsor’s country of residence.
- Passport and valid visa or residence permit for the sponsor.
- Everything on the standard 16-item document checklist as well.
MCC notifies the precise NRI definition and document list each cycle, and it has tightened over recent years. Read the current information bulletin rather than a previous year’s summary.
The failure mode to avoid
There is an established practice of manufacturing NRI eligibility — an uncle abroad who has never met the candidate signing a sponsorship affidavit shortly before counselling. It is worth being direct about how this ends.
NRI documents are verified at reporting, and an allotment that fails verification is cancelled. Not deferred, not corrected — cancelled, after you have surrendered other options, paid the MCC deposit, and passed the reporting deadline for every alternative seat. Courts have repeatedly upheld cancellations of NRI admissions where the sponsorship was found to be a device. The downside is not a fine; it is losing the entire admission cycle.
If your NRI status is real and documented, use it. If it needs constructing, do not.
When NRI is the wrong choice even if you qualify
At roughly ₹2.9 crore in tuition alone, an NRI seat at Santosh costs more than an entire MBBS in several countries whose degrees are NMC-recognised, and more than most Indian families’ total lifetime medical-education budget. Before committing, work through:
- The general-category route. If your rank can reach the institutional seat at ₹1.08 crore, that is the same degree, same college, same faculty, at a third of the cost. Check the cutoff table before assuming it cannot.
- Other deemed universities’ NRI seats, which vary widely in price for a similar rank profile.
- The FMGE / NExT reality if you are comparing against a foreign MBBS — a cheaper foreign degree carries a licensing exam risk that an Indian MBBS does not.
Frequently asked questions
What is the NRI quota fee at Santosh Medical College?
USD 75,000 per year for four years and USD 37,500 in the final year, totalling USD 337,500 for the course, paid annually in the rupee equivalent.
How do I apply for the NRI quota at Santosh Medical College?
You do not apply to the college. NRI seats are allotted through MCC deemed-university counselling at mcc.nic.in, where you register under the NRI category and produce documented proof of NRI status at reporting.
Is the NRI cutoff lower than the general cutoff at Santosh?
Generally yes, because the pool of candidates eligible for NRI seats is much smaller. The trade is a substantially higher fee — roughly 2.7 times the general-category tuition.
Who can sponsor an NRI candidate?
MCC notifies the qualifying relationships each cycle, and the definition is narrow. Sponsorship requires an embassy-attested affidavit plus proof of the sponsor’s NRI status and relationship to the candidate, all verified at reporting.
